Results from 40 years of international forest monitoring (ICP Forests) published

The Programme Co-ordinating Centre of ICP Forests under the UNECE Air Convention has published a 40th Anniversary Brochure and the ICP Forests Technical Report 2025.

For 40 years, the International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests) has been monitoring the impact of air pollution and climate change on European forest ecosystems as part of the UNECE Air Convention.

During the anniversary celebrations in Dresden in May 2025, an Anniversary Brochure was published with an overview of 40 years of forest monitoring in Europe and beyond and a look into the future.

To provide a regular overview of the program's activities, the ICP Forests Programme Co-ordinating Centre (PCC) also publishes an annual ICP Forests Technical Report, which summarizes the most important research results.

This year's report presents results from 32 of the 42 member countries and includes chapters on

  • atmospheric throughfall deposition in European forests in 2023,
  • meteorological conditions in European forests in 2023 and a long-term comparison (1990-2020),
  • tree crown condition in European forests in 2024.

It also includes:

  • national reports on ICP Forests activities from the participating countries;
  • a concise overview of the most relevant key findings in the scientific literature in the forest-relevant, priority themes for the WGE strategic planning: N deposition, ozone, heavy metals, air pollution/climate change interactions;
  • a list of 80 scientific publications for which ICP Forests data and/or the ICP Forests infrastructure was used;
  • a list of all 32 official requests for ICP Forests data between January and December 2024.
