Proposed governance structure for European Forest Monitoring System: ICP Forests and ENFIN as two of the key actors

ICP Forests and the European National Forest Inventory Network (ENFIN), the two pioneers for pan-European forest monitoring, play a crucial role in the proposed governance structure of a future European Forest Monitoring System (EFMS), according to a PathFinder policy brief.

PathFinder, a Horizon Europe project developing a prototype for a European Forest Monitoring System, has recently published a policy brief proposing a governance structure for such a system.

ICP Forests and ENFIN were identified as two of the key actors in the proposed governance structure. Accordingly, they should be involved in the following tasks (among others)

  • Define the objectives and outcomes of the EFMS, and develop common descriptions and protocols together with other key actors
  • Facilitate coordination and the exchange of best practices between Member States, operate a data analysis platform, and disseminate forest information in the form of estimates and maps to the European Commission.
  • Coordinate the exchange of the raw field data with external organizations.
